What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings

Tooth-colored fillings are custom restorations that are used to repair teeth damaged by dental decay. Their placement allows teeth to remain healthier year after year. Made up of composite resin – a putty-like mixture that consists of ultra-fine ceramic and glass particles – they contain no metal, so patients who have sensitivities to traditional amalgam can feel confident moving forward with tooth-colored fillings. These restorations are also color-matched to your existing enamel, so they are natural in appearance, making it nearly impossible for anyone to notice that you have a filling.

The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

Having a tooth-colored filling put in place requires only one dental appointment, which will take about one hour to complete. The process involves:

  • Numbing your mouth with local anesthesia so that you do not feel the dentist clearing out your tooth or placing the filling.
  • Removing the decayed portions of your tooth enamel.
  • Sanitizing the tooth in preparation for the composite resin.
  • Applying the color-matched composite resin to the tooth in layers so that every nook and cranny of lost tooth enamel is fully restored.
  • Using an ultraviolet curing light to harden the layers of resin, which takes only seconds.
  • Sculpting and reshaping the filling so that it lays flat and appears completely natural.
  • Polishing the tooth.

The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings are a new and exciting way to treat cavity-stricken teeth and provide many great benefits, some of which include:

  • A more natural-looking appearance because of the color-matched resin that is put into place to fill in the decayed portion of the tooth.
  • The composite resin that is used instantly bonds to the tooth for a more stable restoration.
  • Less enamel has to be removed because of how flexible composite resin is, so you can expect to keep more of your natural tooth.
  • These fillings are ideal for anyone who has sensitivities or allergies to metal.
  • There is less tooth sensitivity with these fillings, as opposed to traditional amalgam. With tooth-colored fillings, they shield the nerves so that they are less likely to become irritated when exposed to hot or cold temperatures. Also, traditional amalgam expands and contracts, which can make tooth sensitivity worse.
  • Tooth-colored fillings are healthier in the long run because they don’t expand like traditional metal fillings, which tend to weaken the existing tooth.
  • They’re just as durable as traditional amalgam fillings and can last up to 10 years with regular maintenance.
